A NYC Wedding Film… and the love of a camera.

So as I gear up for this year’s wedding season, I’m heading into NYC for a dangerous trip to B & H to pick up some new toys… I mean, new gear.  Before I go, I’m looking back at some of the fun new toys from this past year.  My most favorite toy from 2009 is my main camera.  Upgrading from my Olympus equipment to Canon was tough, mainly because I had worked for Olympus for years and I felt brand loyalty towards them.  However, with Canon’s 5dmII camera offering HD video, I had no choice but to switch.  I shot with the new video-capable Canon for a while before realizing I had NO clue how to even turn the video function on.  Before heading out to a wedding, I googled it, figured out how to get the video function working and shot the video at the bottom of this post.

Shooting video with my DSLR was a lot different than shooting with my professional video gear… certain things aren’t really convenient from an operational standpoint, but any complaints were quelled by the amazing quality of video I was able to get.  I couldn’t stop playing with this camera, and to this day I love it more and more.  Pictures come out amazing (ok, 21 megapixels is overkill, I agree) and the video is killer.  I really do love this camera…

On this first video, I didn’t quite have all the settings right, didn’t quite have the hang of the manual focus for video, but shooting without a big video camera let me get a more personal and intimate view of the wedding… The intro here is a little long, but I was doing this more for me than for anyone else.  Since this wedding was in Grand Central Terminal, I wanted to capture some of the feel of New York City and some of the feel of Grand Central… I wanted this more “fly on the wall” than “wedding videographer”.  Hand held is a little difficult with this camera, but I didn’t have tripods as I was just playing with the video function… but in the end, hand held gave it more of a modern documentary/indie film feel, in my opinion.

Again, wedding season is almost upon us, so check back often… more videos, more wedding pictures, more engagement session posts to come.  Oh, and you’ll find teaser pictures up on facebook also, so if you are a facebook person (I myself am addicted), become a fan.  I’ll be back in NYC for upcoming engagement sessions, for weddings, and of course, I’ll be making some shopping trips and picking up some new gear there… maybe something else will inspire me the way my current camera does.  I won’t trade in my 5dmII (or my 7d for that matter), but I may buy them some accoutrements.  I’ll keep you posted.

Be well,

-Ryan.
